My husband and I moved from Alaska to Florida in October of 2008. We moved because we didn’t want to be cold any more. We haven’t been cold since we got here.
I graduated from Pasadena College of Chiropractic in 1981. I passed my California Chiropractic Licensing exam, but never practiced in California. I thought California was too hot. Alaska seemed like a place where I would never be too hot. So I moved there and practiced for 24 years. And in all that time, I only remember one week when I was too hot, because it went over 80*.
I attended seminars as often as I could, although flying from Alaska does cut down on how often one can attend. Still, I managed to get to many seminars on herbology and chiropractic technique over the years. In Florida, this will be easier. I attended 3 nutritional seminars inside of 2 months!
I visit other chiropractors whenever I travel, and usually learn something new from each one. For instance, in Tuscon, Arizona, I learned about a tool called a Tuper Palm, which I still use when adjusting mid-backs. In South Africa, I saw a chiropractic office, and when I knocked on the door and introduced myself, the chiropractor quickly showed me his office and hopped on his table and asked for an adjustment. Chiropractors were pretty far and few between in South Africa in 1993. After I adjusted him, I learned that he was the examining doctor for the licensing board, and I had just passed my licensing exam for South Africa! I have learned many obscure ways of adjusting by watching and asking questions, such as how to adjust ears. And of course, there was the day I learned about Collinsonia Root, which fixed all my mid-back pain. I am eternally grateful that I visited Dr. Robbin Robbins that day in Anchorage.
Now that we are here in Florida, we are happily discovering all that Florida has to offer. We’ve enjoyed feeding flamingos at Jungle Gardens, seeing alligators in the ditches along Alligator Alley, seeing a manatee at Mote Marine Aquarium, and we think the saltwater is nice to swim in even in March! And Florida has foods that we have never tasted before, like yucca. So if you know of a great place to snorkel or see or do something for local flavor, please share with us!
